Apply to the 2012-2013 OCA-GLA Civil Rights Fellowship!

Building on over two decades of leadership development experience, OCA-Greater Los Angeles Chapter (OCA-GLA) is continuing its 12-month fellowship for the third year. The purposes of the program are to:

  • Develop leadership through critical analysis, skills building, and mentorship on a local, regional, and national level to address social justice issues for Asian Pacific Americans (APA);
  • Provide a platform to engage with the community on issues that are critical to advancing the social, economic and political well-being of Asian Pacific Americans; and
  • Strengthen the national and local networks of OCA and their programming in leadership development, economic development, education, policy advocacy, and community building.


The fellow will:

  • Receive mentoring and coaching from OCA-GLA Board Members and other leaders within OCA’s national network;
  • Gain deeper knowledge and understanding on critical issues affecting APA communities;
  • Participate in personal networking opportunities with community leaders and organizations;
  • Participate in professional and leadership development programs;
  • Work on advocacy issues critical to the APA community;
  • Gain first-hand experience supervising volunteers and interns around specific projects and programs;
  • Gain hands-on experience managing and staffing a community based non-profit organization, including day-to-day operations, project/program development, evaluation, fundraising, and website management, and media relations.


LOCATION & DUTIES

The fellow will be based in the OCA-GLA office located in Los Angeles, California. The fellow will be expected to work Monday through Friday, approximately eight (8) hours per day during regular business hours and participate in and attend certain events during evenings and weekends.

The fellow will from time-to-time be expected to travel for business. The fellow will report to the local leadership of OCA-GLA. There will also be regular communication by phone and email with both internal and external stakeholders.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The term of the fellowship is for twelve (12) months, from July 2012 to July 2013. OCA-GLA will provide a total stipend of $25,000.00 to cover travel arrangements, housing and personal expenses. A separate stipend will be provided for basic health insurance coverage. In order to receive the full-stipend, the fellow will be required to participate in mandatory OCA-GLA events, submit a report of activities, and complete an evaluation at the end of the program.

To apply for the 2012-2013 fellowship program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Demonstrated interest in the social, political, and economic issues affecting Asian Pacific Americans.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing the well-being of Asian Pacific American community.
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal abilities.
  • Relevant work and/or volunteer experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have a graduate or bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution.
  • U.S. citizenship or legal permanent residency by the start of the fellowship.
